A Teaching from Gesin Sedai

A Neat Classroom
The smell of chalk is stronger here, product of a large chalkboard that takes
up most of the southern wall. Row upon row of wooden desks face the
chalkboard. A large desk sits at the head of the classroom, holding a neat
array of teaching utensils atop its light, wooden surface.

A young Novice is standing here, attempting to avoid notice.
An Aes Sedai paces here, her eyes distant.
A beautiful woman with an impressive face stands before you.
Froiisa is standing here.
A slim woman is standing here.

Froiisa rummages through her backpack from some paper and a quill.

Gesin Sedai says 'Being an Aes Sedai means so much more than simply having control over saidar.'

Trysstianna glances at froiisa with a begginglook.

Gesin Sedai says 'Lately, your attitudes have left much to be desired.'

Froiisa sits up straight.

Trysstianna looks up at Gesin.

Gesin Sedai rests a hand on her desk, drumming her fingers while watching the girls with narrowed eyes.

You say 'Sorry Aes Sedai.'

Gesin Sedai says 'For instance, fraternizing with the opposite gender.'

Froiisa blinks quickly.

Yuck, try to cover your mouth next time!

You say 'What's wrong with that? Gesin Sedai?'

Gesin Sedai arches an eyebrow coolly.

Froiisa looks at you.

Gesin Sedai says 'Men only complicate things, girl.'

What's bothering you?

You say 'I suppose so...'

Froiisa raises her hand.

You say 'But I think in a good way.'

Gesin Sedai says 'How can you surrender to Saidar if you're too busy daydreaming about boys.'

Gesin Sedai says 'Yes, Froiisa?'

Gesin Sedai taps her finger impatiently.

Froiisa says 'What exactly do you mean by fratinization, Aes Sedai?'

You giggle.

Froiisa glances at Trysstianna.

Gesin Sedai says 'I mean having inappropriate relations with men while you are supposed to be learning how to become Aes Sedai.'

Froiisa nods in understanding.

Trysstianna cocks her head to the side, thinking about that.

Trysstianna raise hand

Gesin Sedai says 'Yes?'

You say 'Is it then ok to have inappropriate relations withmembers ofthe same sex?'


Froiisa clears her throat.


Gesin Sedai regards you with an unamused look.

Your cheeks are burning.


Gesin Sedai says 'Really, novice? If you must ask questions like perhaps it would be best for us to send you packing from the Tower now.'

You nod in agreement.

You say 'Sorry Aes Sedai'

Gesin Sedai says 'Now, if I can continue..'


Froiisa leans forward, listening.

Trysstianna cats her gaze down again, and nods.

Gesin Sedai says 'I will be teaching you two lessons whenever I wish..'


Gesin Sedai says 'and I expect you to obey the lessons you learn in them like your life depended on it.'

You nod in agreement.


Gesin Sedai says 'I will not tolerate sassy girls ruining the reputation of the White Tower.'


Froiisa nods in agreement.


Gesin Sedai says 'Now pay attention, because I will not be repeating myself.'

Froiisa nods.

You say 'Yes Aes sedai.'

Gesin Sedai says 'I encourage you two to ask appropriate and serious questions, but you will raise your hand first.'

Froiisa nods in agreement.

Gesin Sedai says 'And take ample notes.'


Gesin Sedai gives a sheet of paper to Froiisa.


Gesin Sedai gives a beautiful black feather pen to Froiisa.

Trysstianna raises her hand in the air.


Gesin Sedai gives you a sheet of paper.

Gesin Sedai says 'Yes?'

You say 'I do not know how to scribe. I am sorry Aes Sedai.'

Froiisa smooths a sheet of paper out on her desk.


Gesin Sedai says 'Then simply listen.'


Froiisa sinks deeply into her own thoughts.

You nod in agreement.


Froiisa turns the paper to the other side.


Gesin Sedai says 'Now, if you become Aes Sedai, you will be expected to hold true to the three oaths.'


Gesin Sedai says 'We will be talking about the first one for a bit, to speak no work that is not true.'


Froiisa writes the first oath down on the emoty side of the paper.

Trysstianna looks slightly confused.

Gesin Sedai says 'When roaming the world on White Tower business, you will run into tasks that will require more resources than you have.'

You nod in agreement.

Froiisa nods.


Gesin Sedai says 'Froiisa, how would you go about asking for a favor from a noble man in Caemlyn?'

Froiisa says 'That would depend on if iwas sent on White Tower business, Aes Sedai, if i was i culd introduce myself as an Acepted of the White Tower'


Gesin Sedai says 'So?'

Froiisa says 'And kidly and polietly ask for assistance with what ever i needed.'


Gesin Sedai says 'So you would ask him to donate things to you simply based on merit.'

Gesin Sedai says 'Trysstianna.'

Gesin Sedai says 'Same question.'

Trysstianna pauses for a moment to think on it.

You say 'Well Aes Sedai. If I were sent by the White Tower on a mission, I would tell that noble just that.'

You say 'If the White Tower needed it done, then there is clearly a good reason.'


Gesin Sedai says 'Clearly you haven't spent much time in the world.'

What's bothering you?

Gesin Sedai says 'No one is forced to obey you simply because you are sent from the Tower.'

You nod in agreement.

You say 'Sorry Aes Sedai.'

Gesin Sedai says 'They might, out of fear, but that could leave your lives in dire situations, ones I hope you want to stay out of.'

You say 'I thought the White Tower was something akin to power with the Empire.'

Gesin Sedai sighs loudly.


Gesin Sedai says 'The White Tower is an organization of female channelers Novice.'

Gesin Sedai says 'Yet, we stand apart from the world because we wield saidar.'

You nod in agreement.

Gesin Sedai says 'An immense power that often scares others, and makes us appear different to those who know nothing about it.'


Gesin Sedai says 'However, let us return to the lesson.'


Froiisa nods in agreement.

You nod in agreement.


Gesin Sedai says 'When seeking help from others, you must appeal to their own self-interest, not their mercy.'

Trysstianna nods, understanding

Gesin Sedai says 'Someone will go out of their way to help you if they have something to gain as well.'

Gesin Sedai says 'Be it money or prestiege or the like.'


Froiisa nods.

Gesin Sedai says 'Often times, your needs will amount to nothing to others.'

You nod in agreement.

Gesin Sedai says 'Imagine, if you will, a thread.'

Trysstianna cocks her head to the side, thinking about that.


Froiisa listens.

Gesin Sedai says 'A thread of mercy is thin, and useless to help you out of dangerous water. It will break faster than a piece of hair.'

Gesin Sedai says 'But a tightly woven rope, that combines your needs and desires with that of the person you are helping grows tighter the more you pull on it.'

You nod in agreement.

Froiisa nods, pondering the words.

Gesin Sedai says 'The only time I condone relying on mercy for help..'

Gesin Sedai says 'is when you deal with a woolheaded fool that does not see past his own ego.'

You giggle.

Froiisa blinks her eyes innocently.

You say 'Like Moe?'


Gesin Sedai says 'Build him up by making yourself seem helpless, and he will be ripe for the picking.'

Gesin Sedai says 'Any questions before I move on to our last lesson for today?'

You shake your head.

Gesin Sedai says 'Froiisa?'

Froiisa says 'No, Aes Sedai.'

Gesin Sedai nods in agreement.


Gesin Sedai says 'Very well then.'

Gesin Sedai gathers her shawl around her and paces up and down the front of the classroom again.

Gesin Sedai says 'As both of you should know, information is your most valuable asset.'

Trysstianna turns her head to follow, but keeps her eyes on the floor.


Froiisa nods in agreement.


Gesin Sedai says 'A force ten times smaller than an army can defeat said army, if they are armed with accurate and appropriate information.'

You nod in agreement.

You say 'Indeed'

Gesin Sedai says 'You must never leave a plan simply to chance. And why would you, when the use of spies is so easy?'

Froiisa sinks deeply into thought about the meaning of life.

You nod in agreement.

Froiisa raises her hand.

Gesin Sedai says 'Yes, Froiisa?'

Froiisa says 'but at times taking a chance might eliminate the chance of spies?'

Froiisa adds. 'Aes Sedai.'

Gesin Sedai says 'Would you close your eyes and jump into a hole, not knowing if there was a lion, asps, or worse, a fade inside?'

Trysstianna raises her hand in the air.


Gesin Sedai says 'Believe it or not, but social engagements can be more dangerous than a rattlers nest.'

Gesin Sedai says 'Yes, novice?'

You nod in agreement.

You say 'I was thinking along the same lines Aes Sedai.'

You say 'Only make conflict when you are sure of victory.'

Gesin Sedai says 'Exactly.'

Trysstianna mutters of spiders.

Gesin Sedai says 'Daes Daemar has a terrible way of chewing people up and then spitting them out before they realize what has occured.'

You say 'The game of houses Sedai?'


Gesin Sedai says 'Thus, the use of an eyes and ears network will save you from many plots.'

Gesin Sedai arches and eyebrow at Trysstianna momentarily.

You say 'What Grat game of houses do you speak of?'

Gesin Sedai says 'Interesting that a girl who has spent hardly any time in these lands already knows about the Game of Houses.'

You say 'I know of the words you speak of Aes Sedai.'


Gesin Sedai says 'When you have a group of spies, you must be wary of the information they give you.'


Gesin Sedai says 'Test your spies frequently, so that you many know who to trust and who not to.'

Trysstianna raises her hand in the air.


Gesin Sedai says 'And remember, someone may be spying just as easily on you.'

You say 'why not have but few trusted spies? raised from birth?, Aes Sedai'

Gesin Sedai says 'Because it is harder to raise people from birth, not to mention if they realize you have used them all your life they will shatter.'

You say 'and if you raise them knowing perfectly well that they are being groomed?'

You say 'If one knows one's place beforehand, it's easier to live.'


Gesin Sedai says 'Then who is to say they want that life?'

Gesin Sedai says 'That is an ethics question you may write an essay on and submit to the white ajah.'

You say 'If raised to it, they will not know else there is.'


Gesin Sedai says 'Continuing on.'

You nod in agreement.

Gesin Sedai says 'If you do find out someone is gathering information to be used against you, do not imediately dismiss them forever.'

You giggle.

Gesin Sedai says 'They, too, can be used to your advantage.'

Gesin Sedai says 'By feeding them false information you can prepare a counter attack to a surprise attack, and come out victorious.'

Gesin Sedai says 'Any questions?'

Froiisa taps the end of her quill onto the tip of her nose.

You shake your head.


Froiisa says 'No Aes Sedai.'


Gesin Sedai says 'Very well.'

Trysstianna glances at the smudge on Froiisa's nose.


Gesin Sedai says 'I hope you two leave here with a new attitude.'

Trysstianna cocks her head to the side, thinking about that.

You nod in agreement.

Gesin Sedai says 'That which you think an Aes Sedai should have.'

You say 'I do think I will.Sedai'


Froiisa nods slowly.

Trysstianna raises her hand in the air.


Gesin Sedai says 'I had better see it then, and hear nothing to the contrary, or else there will be more demerits.'


Gesin Sedai says 'yes, novice?'

You say 'You mentioned three oathes? You told us but one Aes Sedai.'

Gesin Sedai says 'Then it is your task to learn the other two.'

What's bothering you?

Froiisa smiles happily.

You say 'Who would tell it to me?'


Gesin Sedai says 'Practically everyone knows them.'

You nod in agreement.


Froiisa says 'The Library is a good start too, Novice Trysstianna.'

You say 'I can't read Sedai.'


Gesin Sedai says 'You two are dismissed, and remember, these lessons may come at any time.'


Froiisa nods in agreement.


Froiisa says 'Thank you for the lesson, Aes Sedai.'


Gesin Sedai nods in agreement.


Froiisa stands.


Froiisa curtseys gracefully.


Froiisa leaves north.

You say 'Thank you for teaching me Gesin Sedai.'


Gesin Sedai says 'I did what needed to be done.'

Trysstianna attempts to curtsey, still not used to it.
