Newbies

Post by Rhollor »

I would like to hear from you guys what types of things you think complete newbies need to be exposed to before being unleashed on the general population. IE teach them how to butcher things and eat and drink etc... Mostly anything you've had a newbie ask you about that you might've thought was kinda dumb or obvious but first time players might actually have trouble understanding. Thanks in advance!

Newbies should probably be told or made aware of percentages for certain pracs for different classes. A warrior should know to practice bash and an abs weapon, and know how much ride to get or something to bash mounted. And of course the other nice things to know for any other class like stabby thieves.

Bank locations, money breakdown (ie how many coppers are in a silver, silver in a gold), how to call gates, how to practice.

Today I encountered a newer player who did not know that you needed to enclose weave names in single quotation marks while casting, so that may be another thing to consider.

A few things that I am asked by most new players... prac locations, where to get good equipment, and whether I might have a map that I can give them.

We should probably have some sort of newbie tutorial that includes instructions on how to use mercs, as well as locations of two smobs - say, scout and knight, as they're on opposite ends of the dodge/abs spectrum; that way folks will be able to get some good equipment pretty early on.

Prac locations, well, that's debatable as to whether or not people should be able to find them for themselves - we could just say, hey, it's in the northeast corner of the keep; I think I'm going to start doing that.

As far as people wanting insta-zoneknowledge, I completely reject the idea of handing out room-by-room maps... however, a *general* map would be a great idea - photoshop up some nifty cartography and post it on the website. That would require someone with an actual sense of style and creativity... I'm sure there are multiple creative people lurking around here, but Myra has shown me the zones she's made, so, I'd trust her to make that map.

My sense of the way we should treat newbies is, overall, in a guiding manner - the distinction between providing spams to pracs and giving a general area for them to look through themselves comes to mind. There are definitely ways to help them out, without babying them - they should be learning things for themselves whenever it's practical. That'll give them a sense of achievement, for one thing, and IMO the best way to learn a zone really well is to run around like a chicken with its head cut off for a few weeks.
