Tried to locate some info on this but didn't find any, is the deterioration permanent or is there a way to reverse the process, and lastly is this really necessary?

Id have to say Yes, No and not particularly.

I think the reason it deteriorates is because it's better than other abs. The game would eventually get to the point where smithed gear is the norm without that in place. I'm not sure on this but I think that's what I heard at one point.

Norum's right. It's the best gear in the game, and this is a good way to keep it limited. A few points about the decay:

1. It's permanent
2. There's no way to repair it
3. The item stats DO NOT get worse as it decays.
4. The decay time on all items starts at a REAL LIFE year. Fighting while wearing the equipment will make this go faster.
