Internet Connectivity?

Ok, I used to know how to work through this type of stuff, but apparently school has fried my brain:

I have cable internet that is provided through my apartment complex. I don't pay a bill for the internet as it is included in my rent. I had internet until one of my roommates moved out and took the modem with him. I bought a new modem and all the other hardware required. Set it up yadda yadda.

The funny thing is, my internet provider, Time Warner, has this dumb scheme to make money. You have to pay them $10 a month to 'rent' their modems and another fee to have them connect you. Of course I am not doing this.

I go through the steps on the setup wizard and it analyzes my connection and it thinks I have a static IP address. It asks me for the IP address, subnet mask, and default gateway. In addition it asks for the preferred and alternative DNS servers.

I call the roommate that just moved out and he said he thought we had a dynamic IP address (which is what I thought). I ignore the wizard and try to set it up myself. It asks if the internet requires a password every time I try to connect. It doesn't, so I say no and it asks for a login and password, along with the MAC address (I have this). The default entry in the login space is 'guest'. I have no idea what this means. The apartment front office is full of morons, and when I try to talk to Time Warner Indian specialists they tell me to 'reset the network.' Sweet! This may work. No, by resetting the network she merely meant restarting the computer, modem, and router. Seriously that is supposed to work??

Sooo anyway, I'm sure some of you are thinking what an idiot, how does he not know this. So any help would be appreciated so I can get internet back, haha.

When you say wizard, do you mean a wizard on a router, do you have a router which is also a cable modem?
Does your cable internet require your router's mac to be registered? (meaning you can't connect unless your isp has your cable modem's mac address)

Yes it is a setup wizard from my router. And no the ISP doesn't require the MAC registered.

I tried to post a print screen of the two parts but alas, I can't figure out how to do that on forums hah.

Basically I think what I am supposed to do is figure out my Account name and Domain name. The static IP- what the wizard said I have- requires like 5 IPs and I didn't do any of that last time I set it up. Now where do I find those names?

chances are your router is ddwrt compatible. upgrade its firmware and then it will work itself out! i have no clue how to help you on this end.

Your cable is not a static ip. It probably requires your dns subnet mask ect ect. you don't need that. just set it to dynamic ip.

another option is plugging your computer directly into your cable modem, i know some have dhcp built in to it
