Smithing has been implemented and can now be practiced and leveled up!

After practicing Smithing at a trade practice mob, check what you can smith by typing SMITH. This list will update as your skill progresses.

So far there are three forges to smith at: Caemlyn, Fal Moran, and the Trolloc Keep.

There are a few main things you should know to get you started:

Basic Smithing Process
  • 1. Rent the forge.
    2. Light the forge.
    3. Smelt the ore.
    4. Smith the item.
Renting the forge

To rent the forge, give at least an hour's rental money to the apprentice. He'll automatically lead you inside the forge and announce how long you've rented it for.

Lighting the forge

To light the forge, hold as many bricks of coal in your inventory as you want, and type LIGHT FORGE. After the forge is lit, the blacksmith will tell you how long it should stay lit for. You don't need to light the forge if the blacksmith has already lit it to work on a project of his own.

Smelting the ore

You can hold anything in your inventory during this process. Type SMELT <MATERIAL TYPE> to refine the ore into a bar. The more weight you hold, the better your chances of getting a large bar instead of a small bar (or a small bar instead of coming up with nothing).

Notes: Bronze is made up of copper, tin, and aluminum. Steel is made up of iron and coal. If for some reason you stop smelting before you've finished, you will lose your materials in the forge.

Smithing the item

You can hold anything in your inventory during this process. Type SMITH <MATERIAL> <ITEM> to begin smithing. You must hold at least the minimum required weight of materials in order to begin.

Notes: You must learn the recipe before you can smith the item. The recipe will tell you how much weight of each material you need to smith each item. If for some reason you stop smithing before you've finished, you WILL NOT lose your materials, but you will have to begin the smithing process over.

Interactivity

The blacksmith apprentice

The apprentice serves as the intermediary between the blacksmith and you. He sits outside each Here is a list of ways to interact with the apprentice:
  • 1. Type LIST - allows you to see the available weapons and armor the blacksmith has smithed recently for his apprentice to sell.
    2. Type BUY RECIPE - allows you to view and purchase the highest level currently available recipes for smithing items.
    4. GIVE the apprentice GOLD - allows you to rent the forge.
    5. KNOCK FORGEDOOR / GIVE GOLD - allows you back into the forge if you still have it rented out.
    6. GIVE the apprentice an ITEM - allows you to sell unwanted smithed items.
    7. SAY HELP / SAY LIST - gives you an overview of the ways you can interact with the apprentice.
From time to time, if the apprentice has collected too many items from the blacksmith and no one has bought them, he will get rid of them and start fresh.

The blacksmith

The blacksmith is available inside the forge for your assistance. Here is a list of ways to interact with the blacksmith:
  • 1. LIST - allows you to view items available for sale from the blacksmith.
    2. BUY ITEM - allows you to purchase an item from the blacksmith.
    3. GIVE the blacksmith an ITEM - the blacksmith will store the item for you, at a flat fee (only works for refined bars/bricks of smithing materials).
    4. STORAGE - allows you to check what the blacksmith has stored for you.
    5. WITHDRAW # - allows you to withdraw an item from your storage (if you have the cash).
The blacksmith will occasionally begin a new project, during which time he will keep the forge lit so you don't have to. After he has completed his item, he'll announce what he's made and give it to the apprentice to sell. The blacksmith will also keep track of the time you've rented the forge for.

The forge
  • 1. Smithing must be done in a forge you have rented.
    2. Forge rental prices increase as you become more experienced in Smithing.
    3. The forge must be lit during the smithing process, and runs on coal.
    4. At any time, you may type EXIT to leave the forge.
    5. You may KNOCK FORGEDOOR to reenter a forge you have rented.

Smithable Items

You can rather easily find out what's good and what's not by taking a look at the smithed item's descriptive name. Smithing will help you create WEAPONS and ABS ARMOR. All smithed items will decay, and if you are wearing them while fighting, they'll decay faster. All smithed items can be smelted back down into bars.

As you progress in your smithing skill, the quality of your work will improve. Here are the quality lists for reference:

Abs

misshapen, thin, flimsy, durable, tempered, resilient, mighty, shimmering, radiant

Weapons

harmless, wimpy, mundane, mediocre, strong, powerful, threatening, wicked, lethal

Please report all bugs via the forum mailing system. Feedback, as always, is appreciated and will be considered thoroughly.

ENJOY!

A small clarification here:

It only matters that you hold enough weight of the material you're attempting to smith in your inventory. In most cases, when you smelt, only the first two ore items will be used, and the total weight will be calculated from them.

Small update:

The time a brick of coal will keep the forge lit for has been increased, and will now vary slightly per brick.

The blacksmith will now announce how long the forge has been lit for in more detail.

Blacksmiths also have a chance to smith a platinum pick that can be used for mining. Check with the apprentice to see the list of items for sale.

Chains are now available to smith.

Please still refrain from smithing axes or clubs until you see a post on this thread.

Thanks!

The smelting function has changed a little:

1. You can still hold whatever you want in your inventory during this process.

2. You can now smelt all your ore of the same material type at the same time.

3. You can now smelt down any item(s) that appear to be made from the same smithable material. For example, you could hold a simple iron key, a heavy iron shield, a thick iron tunic, and an iron bracelet with ancient engravings, and type SMELT IRON.
Note: items not obtained through smithing will yield less weight when being smelted, as will items that clearly don't have a lot of the material in them (for example: a pair of gold-fringed boot). Also, any decay progress will lower the weight yielded for a given item.

4. To reiterate the basic functionality: the more weight of the material you're attempting to smelt you hold in your inventory, the more chance you'll have of producing more/larger bars.

5. You cannot smelt ore and other items at the same time.

I updated the first post on this thread with more ways to interact with the blacksmith:

GIVE an ITEM
STORAGE command
WITHDRAW command

See above!

It is now possible for players NOT practiced in Smithing to rent the forge (in the case they may wish to smelt something into bars and trade/sell the bars away).

The apprentice will now accept refined bars if players wish to sell them instead of using them to smith.

Clubs are now available to smith.

This marks the end of my work on smithing for a while, as I'm moving on to a new project. Please continue to post feedback and suggestions, and we can improve the newly finished system.
