If you type smelt xxx before opening the furnace, you get a bar of xxx but still keep the ore.

With furnace closed . . .

You pull a lever attached to the furnace, and it roars to life.
You'd better open it first!

Weird, furnaces weren't even supposed to be closeable. Don't abuse this until we get it fixed.
