Lances are not a specific melee weapon. If you want to use them that way, expect poor ob and damage. If anything I would like lances to do more charge damage, with the possibility of the lance being destroyed on %.
Spears should not be compared to lances. A good spear is an excellent melee weapon but people are to focused on getting the best set up with as few maluses as possible. I have no problem with spears being used to charge, but they should have significantly higher failure rate and lower damage than a lance.
All weapons have pros and cons, for example, top end daggers have awful melee potential but will stab for quite nice damage.
I have various characters in quite different set ups, each one based around a different style of play. It is just a question of deciding what you are prepared to give up to play how you want to play (warriors do not really count, as my LS warrior has 2 weapons at 99%, bash 99%, lances/charge at 95% - but then again a warriors strength is the ability to use mutliple weapons successfully!)

Yes, stabbers have two choices for melee daggers. Sapphire daggers have decent damage but low ob, making it only useful against abs, and gold etched silver daggers have high ob but horrible damage. Opalescent daggers and emerald knives are in between, but both are useless against a dodger or comboer. There's also a couple serratuses floating around, which might be decent, but they haven't loaded anywhere in a long time.

Are you serious about lances being a melee weapon? Ever watched a film with jousting in it. The big long piece of wood is a lance. Does the knight sit there trying to slay his oppoent with it. I think not!
Both my DS and LS stabbers have 2 daggers too

You are talking about jousting lances. We aren't. Stop thinking lance in the 'strictest sense' like it says in this quote
The term lance has become a catchall for a variety of different pole weapons based on the spear. The name is derived from lancea, Roman auxiliaries' short javelin, although according to the OED, the word originally came from the Iberian Language. The lance, under many names, was also heavily employed in the Asian steppe. In the strictest sense, the lance is a heavy, long thrusting spear used on horseback and couched under the arm on one hand. Often, any spear which is not thrown (e.g. a thrusting spear) is called a lance when used from horseback.
Stop thinking lance in the 'strictest sense'. Start thinking of it as 'any spear that isn't thrown'.

I bet, when trollocs used lances, if they had been imped as crappy melee, trolls would have bitched and complained non-stop until it was changed.
Also even if this game was thinking lances in the 'strictest sense'; not everything in this game needs to be realistic. Some of it can be for balance issues. Or i'm going to start complaining that when i bash someone's head into bloody fragments a couple times they should die.

I am all for spears being used to charge, just not being as effective.
I.E having lower charge damage and landing rate.

I think charge and skewer timers should continue until your target is either engaged, or someone breaks your defense. Stupid how one guy spamming protects the slow guy rolling a bash.
I also think there needs to be an uber lance. Something comparable to golden spear. 2h nice all around lances. Finally, I think charge should get like 30-40 more dmg than skewer, considering you have a lot more mass bearing down on you with the horse included. Balanced by the fact that horses die in one stab or skewer.

I agree with you on both counts chase, let charge do more dmg since humans cant charge in all rooms and cant use sneak with it, and charge and skewer needs to be like stab, the current way it is just plain sucks. You cant start a charge on someone engaged and you can finish a charge if you end up getting engaged after the charge is started. I hate it!
Charge and skewer are a waste of pracs atm. Only use I get out of it is killing horseloads.

Yea so...anything going to happen with charge/skewer. it's pretty much said that lances suck and need a major improvement as do basic charge/skewer because it's very very unlikely that you will get a charge off on someone because 1) if someone agroes you you can't charge someone else 2) no lag in game making it so you could probably just type in k human or move n s e w u d pretty quickly 3) nothing to fail engaging a charging enemy like you can fail notice. 4) nothing like disengage bash to assist in this matter.

could look at the horrible lag on landing a charge as well.

Could some sort of faceoff system for charge/skewer be implemented. It would add a more useful purpose to charge and skewer if your opponent can charge along with you.
