o rly? looks like contrive works just fine with the context i used it in. i just used the meaning that's less common.

if you said "is beyond my ability to concoct" or "is beyond my ability to make up" or even "is beyond my ability to devise" in the same context, i.e. stating that something is impossible for you to understand, all of those synonyms for "contrive", they'd be incorrect. it's an action meaning to plan, to design. i think you were looking for "is beyond my ability to conceive"

there is sort of an urban legend that says that walt disney left part of his fortune as a bequest to the first man to become pregnant but i looked it up just now and it looks like it's false
