I don't go to tech school, but I go to this after school course by Cisco. (which I'm almost finished with, so I'm half a network administrator 8) ).

Don't ask me to prove it to you, or I'll tell you the commands to configure a router and put an ACL on it.

OK maybe a little more on topic now....

For this newbie guide I was thinking if all the "regulars" on this mud (being the people that have played here since forever ago, way before we decided to name it kinslayer, and the people who log on every day...basically the people you'll see when you log on) came up with bunches of tips and then wrote notes in a "guide" that could be a readable item given to newbies, it would automatically give the newbie someone to look up to, look for and talk to while mudding here... example:

WHERE TO PRACTICE THIEF SKILLS
Starting from the fountain, head n 3u w and you'll see a sneaky thief willing to teach you skills. Type 'practice' and he'll give you a list of skills to practice. Type 'practice <skillname> to practice that skill. I'd recommend going for 'short blades' first.
Look for me around the stronghold.
-Nicotine

stuff like this would give a starting newbie something to do, someone to look for, and someplace to explore to. suggestions?

I'd be glad to help make this also.

Hell, nico we could split it up and write it.

Also would be pretty neat if we started naming chokes(we don't have to do human body hehe!)

But honestly, that would help out quite a bit I think in pk, and the casual newbie would be able to know where "blight s choke" is depending on what we name it or how to reference.

Other things like that, other tips sound just dandy. :)

What do yah think Galnor?

we could write two guides, one for light and one for dark, and a human will start with the light one, and a trolloc will start with the dark one...just a collection of tips and stuff from the players that will get a newbie started.

Assuredly :), that's classic, being as we both played both sides greatly, doesn't matter which I do :)

But also, don't think we should do it yet, I think the imm's are changing the zones :D

So we'll have to wait till mud reopens. Thats when the fun begins again, testing out the eq and exploring zones while pking....ah....good fun 1hr+ after working a long day and hanging with the ladies :D

I remember posting asking if players felt up to doing this. I thought, like Nicotine, that having players names up there it would give new players someone to connect to with the class.

Unfortunetly, I only received two entries, one from Nicotine, and one from Laer. So realising that I would most likely be redoing all the help files anyway, I postponed the project and put it on my "to do" list since there were more pressing issues that came up. I suppose I should give a reward to both of you for your entries like I had promised although nothing was put into play but thats more my fault then yours ;).

In any case, this was my vision at the time: There would be two types of documention for each class, plus starting out guides. Basicly the in-game ones where new players type "help thief" and they would get a short description of it. There would also be a slightly longer version for the website. The guides for starting out in a race would also be on the website. Since I want everything that a new player would need to be easily found straight from the website.

I don't think that including what % in every skill, and what stats and all that would be a good idea. I think having more of an RPish view on it is much better. You have to take the perspective of someone just finishing the books, that they want to be their character, whereas often the mud junkie is stuck on all the technical terms like stats etc. Much better to describe the "sneaking, backstabing, and short blades" then saying "get sneak, backstabing, and short blades to 90% at least, and if you have some extra pracs left over get some track that would be cool".

Those were my ideas on it, I welcome any more input you want to throw in.

I'd be glad to help you with that Ravir, I can see what you'd like.

I can work on it when I get time, but any other idea's would be appreciated.

Could be written in rp form as you said:

Class "bonus" (pracs-rp)
-The skills notably required, but other possibilities.(sneaking as you said and the likes)
-Armor/and defense types, all rp form, but most notably a warrior would be abs and thief would be dodge.
-perhaps, at end, could have a suggestion to "help thief pk"(to suggest how to use the skills, rather than just saying what a thief would likely do to use its best abilities)

Things along those lines, be glad to do rpish form, or anything like that, just would like a bit more insight and ideas/suggestions from what you want.

Its really up in the air right now, just brain storming. I definitly want the RPish one in the help in game files, but then for the sake of explaining the game better perhaps having every class skill described (as in what it's supposed to do, not the % you should get it at), for the help section of the website would be better.

Oh, when mailing me things, if you get some sort of error message, don't worry about it, your mail got through. Don't have to keep mailing 5-6 times ;).
